When Michael was drafted in the war, the lives of several people changed. Their son Yair, who had a strong bond with his father, was forced to spend time without him, without knowing where he was or what might happen to him. All of Michael’s friends and colleagues who cared about him must wait and see if he returns. The maids that he hired to help his wife were affected because they were to work in his house until he returned. However, even though all of these people were affected, Hannah was the one who was affected most by him leaving for war. The entire time they were married, she never really showed a great deal of affection. There were times where she did, but there really wasn’t a long span. “About this time, the flavor of our nights changed. By dint of prolonged and careful attention Michael had learned to make my body glad” (Oz 111). Hannah started to feel some type of connection with him, but this was not something that happened all the time, it was something that seemed to be forced here and there to make sure their marriage stayed afloat. “Now you’re looking at me like that again. It’s not my fault” (Oz 183). Michael has just received the call-up papers and Hannah is already upset, before he even leaves. Hannah realizes here that her husband, someone who has taken great care of her and made sure everything she ever needed she had, wont be with her every minute and the reality of love and life hits her, it doesn’t last forever. Hannah constantly listens to the radio, to see if anything had happened. She is anxious in wondering where he is and if he is alright. “I wonder if Michael remembered to take his heartburn tablets” (Oz 185). Something so small as heartburn as gotten Hannah worried, when before he left, she could care less about the heartburn because he had it under control. Even though she misses her husband, because he is not there, she starts to realize that all the of the things she used to do as a teenager, she can still do very well, and she realizes she is still able to make boys fall for her at a drop of a hat, and it makes her want to torment and want boys more. “He was mine. All mine. He was at my mercy” (Oz 204). Hannah is torturing Yoram because he feels as though he is being inappropriate with a married woman, and she keep egging him on, like he is a play toy. She is finally letting loose again and realizing that people still think she is attractive and she can gain the attention of young men. But when Michael comes home, she realized how much he means to her and that he is happy being his wife. “After eight years of married life, people are bound to think alike” (Oz 232). Hannah tells Michael that because they are married they have become one, and through this whole journey with him, she realizes that he is supposed to be with her, and that she is supposed to be with him. And him being drafted into the war made her realize that she was supposed to be with Michael, because he made her complete.
Michael being drafted into the war was a big change for the family and close friends that knew Michael. Even though Michael did not have a dangerous position in the army, people were still worried about him. Yair, his son, was worried about his dad and was forced to now spend time with his mom all alone. Like Raphael said, many people were affected by Michael going to war, but Hannah was affected the most. While Michael was away, she realized many things about herself and their relationship and what their relationship actually meant. Hannah realized her true feelings for Michael and even though she flirted with other men while he was away, she knew that her and Michael were meant to be together. Another area that Hannah was affected with Michael going away was her relationship with her son, Yair. She was not close to her son and did not know how to show affection to him. Michael was close to him and she felt threatened by that. Yair was a growing boy who loved to learn and was always curious about something and asking question. Michael was always able to give him an answer, but Hannah was not and that bothered Yair. “Daddy doesn’t know everything, but when Daddy doesn’t know he says he doesn’t know” (Oz 206). When Hannah did not give Yair an answer, he sometimes even got mad. “Even when I asked him in a sudden panic if we had turned off the gas before we left the house, he didn’t say a word” (Oz 206). As a result, Hannah would get annoyed with the way Yair was acting. “I hated his stubborn pride” (Oz 206). This was not healthy for a relationship that was never all that stable. With Michael gone for the war, Hannah learned about her relationship with Michael as well as Yair. She realized that Michael and herself were meant to be together, but she learned things about her and Yair’s relationship. Michael was closer to Yair so when he left, it was hard for Hannah to “replace” Michael in Yair’s life. When Michael left, Hannah was greatly affected and was able to change and learn because of it.
Michael going to war was a very big change for Yair, and it was a great change for the relationship between Hannah and her son. While Michael was gone, Hannah was forced to interact with him, which she never really did. She resented her son, and tried hard not to associate anything he did with her. “Yair is showing signs of a cold authority. He does not get it from Michael. Or from me either” (Oz 215). Hannah sees terrible qualities in her son, as she did when he was first born. “I did not like the way the child looked when he was so bursting with joy” (Oz84). Hannah is upset that Yair was glad to see her husband, and did not use the term Yair or my son, but the child, as to make him someone else’s child. Because she was stuck taking care of him, she resented Michael, because he was able to take care of Yair and she was not. “Now that you have been called-off, the shutters stay open day and night. I have been thinking about you. You knew in advance you were being called up for a war, not for maneuvers” (Oz 193). Hannah is upset that he is gone because she realizes that all of the things that were done in the house, like taking care of Yair, and the cooking, and the cleaning were Michael’s job, and now that he is gone, she realizes that she can’t do them, and therefore is resentful of him leaving. This resentment however, is why she misses him so much. She realizes that he is the one she is meant to be with forever, and that him leaving is the worst thing that can happen. “What would happen to us if Michael fell ill, even slightly” (Oz 84). She realizes that if anything were to happen to her husband, their family would fall apart, and that was something she did not want to see.
