When Hannah became pregnant at a young age, she was upset about having to give up her studies. She loved her studies and she was no longer able to take classes anymore. When Yair was first born, Hannah was ill and was on bed rest, but she did not seem to mind being catered to and letting Michael do all of the work. This led her to have a bad attitude towards their relationship because he was doing all the work and she did not even care. “If the baby cried in the night Michael would pick him up and carry him backwards and forwards across the room...” (Oz 78). Hannah started to take Michael for granted and it was a bad attitude to have in the relationship. Michael would go to school and work hard to earn his money and she would go and spend it all. “I spent a month’s earnings in a single morning. I bought myself s green coat, a pair of fur-lined boots, suede shoes, three long-sleeved dresses and a casual cardigan in orange with a zip fastener” (Oz 164). Hannah did not appreciate the hard work that Michael did and was just worried about herself. Michael was very appreciative of his wife and he showed it when he dedicated his first article ever published in a scientific journal. The dedication said, “To Hannah, his understanding wide, the author wishes to dedicate this work” (Oz 118). The relationship of Hannah and Michael all changed when their son was born. Hannah used to be the typical household wife and make Michael breakfast every morning and they both were understanding and happy with one another. When Hannah quit her studies and had Yair, her attitude and role in the family changed leaving Michael to do all of the work. Hannah took him for granted and became content with their roles in life. When Michael left for war however, Hannah became depressed and realized that she needed Michael in her life and how good he was to her and their son Yair.
Because Hannah got pregnant at a young age and was forced to grow up and start raising a family, she became very resentful of her son for ruining all she could have had. "At five in the morning, Michael would get up, boil some water, and wash the baby's diapers" (Oz 78). She could honestly care less that her husband does all the things that she should be doing as the baby's mother, especially during that time. After time passes, she starts to see things in Yair she doesn't like, and tries really hard not to get to close to him. "I beat Yair whenever he displayed this sullen insolence. I would thrash him, without looking into calm gray eyes, until, panting, i succeeded from ringing the sobs from his throat" (Oz 103). Hannah doesn's display any type of emotion when striking her son, even if it was something he could have deserved, she shows no remorse, which is very untypical of a mother. She was not like any other mother, she was cold and distant from both her child and her husband. However, Michael had changed the opposite. At first, he was not happy with the fact Hannah was pregnant. "Michael was not at all pleased when i told him. Twice he asked me if I was certain" (Oz 57). Michael finds out about Hannah and really does not want her to be pregnant. But through time. he learns to accept it, and he grows very fond of his son. "But I have the feeling you're not wild about him. One's got to be wild" (Oz 142). Michael shows emotion towards someone, when before Yair was born, Hannah was showing all the emotion. THe relationship dramatically changes because of Yair, and the attitudes of Michael and Hannah are severely altered.
Raphael is right. When Yair was born, the attitudes of Hannah and Michael changed. Michael went from not being happy that Hannah was pregnant at all, to loving and caring for his son the way a parent should care for them. Hannah showed no affection for her son at all. “When my son looked at me I remembered that he could not see yet. The thought frightened me” (Oz 77). Most mothers would love her baby looking at her whether the baby could see her or not. Another situation Hannah showed no affection for her son was when Yair first started showing signs that he recognized his father. Yair would get a big smile on his face when he saw Michael. “I did not like the way the child looked when he was so bursting with joy. I told Michael that I was afraid our son would not turn out to be particularly bright” (Oz 84). Michael was insulted by Hannah’s statement here. He loved his son and was ecstatic that Yair knew who he was. Michael sat down that night and even wrote a postcard to his father and his aunts informing them that his son recognized them. When Yair was brought into the world, it changed the attitudes in the Gonen family. Before he was born Hannah loved pleasing Michael with different things and now she detested when Michael paid attention to the baby. Yair changed Hannah’s attitude toward everyday life and also changed her attitude and her relationship with her husband Michael.
